Few lighthouses stand as far from land as Sand Key, which rises from a reef about four miles southwest of Key West. Its beam guided vessels through the Straits of Florida, a busy route where ships faced shifting shoals and strong currents. Views of remote towers like this one were often made as engravings or drawings for period publications, giving viewers a sense of isolation they would never experience firsthand. The light marked the edge of the Florida Reef for mariners, a single beacon in open water.
