Few lighthouses stand as exposed as the Bell Rock, a reef in the North Sea about 11 miles off Arbroath, Scotland, that lies submerged at high tide. This view shows the tower under a storm, with the sea striking it from the north east, the direction from which gales often drove waves across the rock. Robert Stevenson designed the light, and its construction between 1807 and 1810 was a major engineering feat, carried out in the few hours each day when the reef was uncovered. First lit in 1811, the tower still guides ships today.
