Few views of the Bell Rock Lighthouse show it battered by weather, and this engraving shows the tower on its isolated reef off the Scottish coast with heavy seas breaking from the northeast. The lighthouse was designed by Robert Stevenson, whose engineering built the tower on a rock that is submerged at high tide, and it first showed its light in 1810. The scene is based on a drawing by J.M.W. Turner, engraved by J. Horsburgh, and it appeared as an illustration in Stevenson's own account of the project. Its record dates the print to 1824, though that date is unverified.
