Here the Cape Hatteras lighthouse stands above a still pool of water that doubles its striped tower, a view that the 1938 date places in the years when the surrounding shoreline was being set aside as a national seashore. Completed in 1870, the tower is known for its black-and-white diagonal bands and its height of about 208 feet, which made it a landmark for mariners off the Outer Banks. The lighthouse was later moved inland in 1999 to protect it from encroaching surf, so this 1938 view records it in its original coastal setting.
