Few harbors in the Mediterranean look as striking by night as Algiers, and this print shows a lighthouse standing against moonlit water. The Detroit Photographic Company issued it around 1899 as part of its catalog of scenic and marine views, using the photochrom process. That Swiss-developed method built up color from several lithographic stones, each prepared by hand, and it was costly enough that the prints were often bought as keepsakes by travelers. Look closely at the sky and water, where the soft tonal gradations reveal the care that went into each stone.
