The Corbière Lighthouse stands on a rocky islet at the southwestern tip of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, and this view shows it under moonlight in the 1890s. The tower was built in 1873 on a reef that had long threatened shipping in the approaches to St. Helier, and its beam marked a dangerous stretch of coast where strong tides run hard. Photochrom prints like this one were hand-colored by a process developed in Switzerland, which made scenic places such as Jersey popular with travelers and armchair tourists of the period.
