The second of two Library of Congress views of Corbière Lighthouse shows the structure on its rocky islet at the southwestern tip of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands. The tower was completed in the 1870s to guide ships past a coast of dangerous reefs, and at low tide a causeway still links it to the shore. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1890s that turned black-and-white photographs into hand-tinted lithographs. Photochroms like this one were popular souvenirs of travel destinations, so the print shows both a working navigational aid and the way Victorian-era viewers saw the British coast.
