Douglas Head, on the east coast of the Isle of Man, is a rocky headland with a lighthouse that guides ships into Douglas harbor, and this view pairs it with the bathing cove tucked below. Bathing coves like this one drew Victorian holidaymakers, who came by steamer from Liverpool and Northern England to walk the cliffs, swim in the sheltered water, and take the sea air. The picture is a photochrom, a color print made from a photograph by a process developed in Switzerland in the 1890s and widely used for tourist views. Its soft, hand-tinted look shows how these prints were meant to make distant seaside resorts seem vivid and inviting to viewers at home.
