The lighthouse on Douglas Head, at the north edge of the bay, anchors this view of the Isle of Man's main harbor town, with the bathing cove spread out below it. Photochrom prints like this one were made by a Swiss process that combined photographs with hand-applied color, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold them in the United States as souvenir views of Britain and Europe. This example comes from the company's 1905 catalog of English views, where it carried print number 10183. The pairing of a working lighthouse with a seaside leisure spot reflects how Victorian resorts like Douglas drew visitors as much for the sea air and bathing as for the shoreline itself.
