The Eddystone Lighthouse stands on a reef about 14 miles southwest of Plymouth, England, where the sea breaks heavily over the rocks. John Smeaton's granite tower, completed in 1759, was an engineering landmark, and its successor, designed by James Douglass, replaced it in 1882 after the old tower was dismantled and re-erected on Plymouth Hoe. This color photochrom print was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold such views in its 1905 catalog of English scenes, and it was made in the 1890s. The print captures the tower as tourists and mariners would have known it in that era.
