Lowestoft, a fishing and seaside town on the Suffolk coast, is the subject here, and the High Lighthouse marks its shoreline as a guide for vessels approaching the North Sea coast of England. This print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold numbered views of England in its catalogues; this one is number 10843 in the 1905 catalog J. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland in the early 1890s, printed several lithographic stones in color over a photographic base, which gives the scene its soft, painterly tones.
