Flamborough Head is a chalk headland on the Yorkshire coast, and this view shows the lighthouse that stands on its cliffs above the North Sea. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that the Detroit Publishing Company brought to America and sold widely as travel views in the 1890s and early 1900s. Its listing in the company's 1905 catalog of English views shows how such images were marketed to armchair travelers and visitors who wanted a colorful record of coastal scenery.
