Corbière Lighthouse stands on a granite islet at the southwestern tip of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, and a causeway links it to the shore at low tide. Trinity House completed the tower in 1874, and its light has guided ships past the dangerous reefs off this coast ever since. This 1890s Photochrom print comes from a period when the Swiss Photoglob company sold richly colored views of European and British scenery to travelers and armchair tourists. The process layered several lithographic stones to produce its soft, saturated tones, so the rocks, sea, and sky read more like painted scenes than like black-and-white photographs.
