The lighthouse at Corbière stands on a rock at the far southwestern tip of Jersey, reached by a causeway that is passable only at low tide. It was built in the 1870s to guide ships past the reefs that have wrecked vessels along this coast for centuries. This photochrom print, one of several views of the site in the collection, comes from the 1890s, when the Swiss color process was used to produce inexpensive picture postcards and travel views of places like the Channel Islands. The bright, hand-tinted colors give a sense of how tourists of the period pictured these rocky shores.
