Few lighthouses in this collection are shown at night, which makes this moonlit view of the Algiers coast stand apart. The scene dates to 1899, when Algiers was the capital of French Algeria and its harbor was a busy hub linking North Africa with Marseille and other Mediterranean ports. The photochrom process, developed by the Swiss firm Orell Füssli and its licensees, produced hand-colored-looking prints from photographic negatives, and these were sold as souvenirs to travelers and collectors. Look for the way the moon silvers the water and the white town rising behind the harbor wall.
