South Stack Lighthouse sits on a small rocky islet just off the western tip of Holyhead, on the island of Anglesey in northwest Wales, reached by a steep flight of steps and a suspension bridge across a narrow channel. This Photochrom print from the 1890s shows the tower and its keeper's buildings perched above the sea, a setting that made the station a demanding posting for the men who tended its lamp. The Photochrom process, a early color printing method, was used by the Photoglob company to produce vivid views of British and European landmarks for travelers and collectors of the period. Its bright, hand-tinted look gives the rocky coast and whitewashed structures a vividness that a plain black-and-white photograph would not have.
