South Stack Lighthouse sits on a small rocky island just off Holyhead, on the northwestern tip of Anglesey, reached by a steep flight of steps cut into the cliff. This photochrom print, a color process that combined photography with hand-finished lithographic stone, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog of Welsh views, issued around the turn of the twentieth century. The lighthouse was built in the 1800s to warn ships away from the dangerous coastline and the Irish Sea approaches to Holyhead, and it remains one of the more dramatic examples of its kind in Britain.
