Llandudno is a seaside resort on the north coast of Wales, and this view turns to its lighthouse, which stands on the rocky headland of the Great Orme, looking out over the Irish Sea. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that transferred photographs onto stone lithographic plates, with each color applied separately. The Detroit Publishing Company later sold such images in America, and their catalogues offered many British scenes to travelers and armchair tourists. The soft, painted-looking colors show how photochrom was meant to make distant places feel vivid and familiar.
