Neufahrwasser, the outer harbor of Danzig, is the setting for this photochrom of its lighthouse, which guided ships working the approach to the port. In the 1890s Danzig, then in the German province of West Prussia, was a busy shipping point for grain and timber moving down the Vistula. The print uses photochrom, an early color process that layered several lithographic stones over a photograph, and it appeared in the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of German views. The town is now Gdańsk in Poland, following the border changes after 1918 and 1945.
