A new lighthouse at Swinemünde, on the Baltic coast of Pomerania, is the subject here, now the Polish town of Świnoujście. The town sits where the Świna River meets the sea, so a light at its harbor entrance helped ships find the channel between sandbars. The picture is a photochrom, an early color process that used multiple printing stones to add hand-tinted tones to a photograph. Detroit Publishing Company sold such views as travel souvenirs and catalogued this one as number 8380 in its 1905 list of German scenes.
