Helgoland is a small red-cliffed island in the North Sea, and this print shows its lighthouse standing above the rocks. The island passed from British to German control in 1890, so the view captures a German North Sea outpost at a time when it was becoming a popular resort. The color comes from the photochrom process, a early method in which a photographic negative guided hand-applied lithographic stones, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold these views of Germany in the United States. Its catalog number and 1905 listing mark it as one of the company's many travel images from that period.
