This photochrom print shows the lighthouse at Dunkirk, a French port on the North Sea coast near the Belgian border, and it was made to be sold as a view of a working harbor landmark. The image is a photochrom, a color process based on Swiss lithographic printing that gave photographs a painted, saturated look. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held the American rights to the process, issued it in a catalog of French architecture and sites, and the print is numbered 8097 in its 1905 listing. Lighthouses like this one were practical navigation aids for busy shipping lanes, and photochroms of them were popular with travelers who wanted a souvenir of the coast.
