The lighthouse and the spire of St. Peter's church share one view of Calais, a port that sits on the narrowest stretch of the English Channel, roughly 21 miles from Dover. In the 1890s the town was a busy cross-Channel harbor, with steamers, fishing boats, and ferries moving in and out, so a navigation light beside a church tower shows how closely maritime life and civic life were tied together. Saint-Pierre was a long-standing parish church, and its Gothic silhouette was a familiar landmark to sailors approaching the coast.
