Genoa's lighthouse, known locally as the Lanterna, stands on a promontory at the harbor entrance and is one of the oldest lighthouses still in use in the Mediterranean. This 1890s view shows the tower from the water side, with the city's waterfront rising behind it. The print was made by the Detroit Publishing Co., which sold color views of European and American scenes using the photochrom process, a costly method that layered several lithographic stones to add color to a photograph.
