The lighthouse and villas at Blankenberghe, on the Belgian coast, show a seaside resort at the edge of the North Sea in the 1890s, when fashionable villas were rising along the dunes and promenade. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that used hand-prepared stone or metal plates to build up tints over a photographic base. The Detroit Publishing Company acquired rights to the process in the United States and issued many European views like this one, so the picture also records the travel-print trade of that decade. Look at the soft, painterly color, which was the process's main appeal to buyers.
