Blankenberge's lighthouse stands among the villas of this Belgian North Sea resort, which sets this view apart from the board's other coastal scenes. Such towns grew fashionable in the late 1800s as rail lines carried holidaymakers from inland cities to the shore, and handsome houses rose along the dunes to accommodate them. The picture is a photochrom, a process that printed a photograph from lithographic stones and added color by hand, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold these Belgian views to American buyers as travel keepsakes.
