Few harbor views in the Photochrom series pair a working lighthouse so directly with a major church, which makes this scene of Marseille's waterfront stand out. The cathedral, known as La Major, was completed in the 1890s in a Romanesque-Byzantine style with banded stone, so the building was still new when this view was made. The photochrom process, developed in Zurich, combined several stone lithographs into one color image and was hand-retouched, which accounts for the soft, saturated tones. The print is from a Detroit Publishing Company catalog of French views issued in 1905, though the photograph itself dates from about 1890 to 1900.
