Few places on the Baltic coast were tied to shipping as closely as Swinemünde, the port at the mouth of the Swine River on the island of Usedom, then in Pomerania and now Świnoujście, Poland. This photochrom view shows its lighthouse, a landmark for vessels entering the harbor. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, built color prints from several stone lithographs, each hand-worked before printing, which gives the scene its soft, painted tones. Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America, and this one comes from its catalog of German scenes, likely made in the 1890s.
