Mumbles Head Lighthouse stands on a rocky headland at the western entrance to Swansea Bay, guiding ships past the reefs that have long made this stretch of the Welsh coast dangerous. The lighthouse dates to the late 1700s, and the village of Mumbles grew up nearby as a fishing and seaside resort. This photochrom print was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which licensed the Swiss photochrom process and sold hand-tinted views of places like this one to American buyers in the 1890s and early 1900s. Its soft, saturated colors show how such views were meant to make distant landscapes feel vivid and near.
