The lighthouse at Llandudno, on the north coast of Wales, is the detail that sets this view apart from the many seaside scenes of the period. Llandudno was a fast-growing resort town in the 1890s, drawing holidaymakers by rail to its sands, piers and the limestone headland of the Great Orme. Photochrom prints like this one were produced by a Swiss process that applied hand-coated color to a black-and-white photographic base, so the stone, sky and sea appear in saturated tones that were unusual for their day. The lighthouse itself marked a working coast, and its presence in the picture reminds the viewer that the resort sat beside busy shipping lanes.
