Two cast iron towers, one on a hill in Bermuda and one at Morant Point on Jamaica's eastern tip, are the subjects here. Both date from the 1840s, when British foundries could cast tower sections in standard pieces, ship them across the Atlantic, and bolt them together on site. That method suited remote islands with few skilled masons and little good building stone. Gibbs Hill, rising above the island's southern shore, is often cited as one of the oldest surviving cast iron lighthouses in the world and remains a well-known landmark.
