An iron-framework lighthouse standing on open water sets this picture apart from the stone towers that dominate most lighthouse views. Structures like this were built on skerries and sandbars where no solid rock rose above the waves, so engineers erected a lattice of iron legs and braced them into the seabed to hold the lantern clear of the surf. Keepers reached such stations by boat and often lived aboard for long stretches, reliant on supply runs in rough weather. The open framework also let wind and water pass through, which made it sturdier in storms than a solid mass would have been.
