Few lighthouses look as improbable as one raised on slender legs above open water, and the 7 KNOTS sign on its structure appears to flag the strong tidal current that made such a station worth marking. Offshore towers of this kind, often built on iron or timber pilings, kept the keeper's quarters and lamp above the waves where solid rock or a masonry tower was impractical. Designs like this spread along coasts and estuaries through the 19th and early 20th centuries, when growing shipping traffic demanded reliable warning lights. The open framework also shows how builders adapted to shifting sand and deep, fast water.
