Salmon River Lighthouse stands where the river meets Lake Ontario near Port Ontario, a spot that gave boats a clear marker for the harbor entrance along a shoreline with few landmarks. Lake Ontario's southern shore was busy with schooners and steamers carrying grain, lumber, and passengers, and small harbor lights like this one helped crews find safe passage in fog, darkness, and winter storms. Lighthouses on the lake were often built with sturdy masonry and kept by resident keepers who tended the lamp and logged the weather. Today the tower is a reminder of how much of the region's trade depended on navigation aids like this one.
