Duluth's ship canal cut through the narrow sandbar of Minnesota Point to link the harbor with Lake Superior, and this view shows the lighthouse that guided vessels at the canal's far end. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a pioneering American photographer known for her documentary and architectural work, made the picture in 1903. In those years Duluth was a busy port, where ore and grain freighters moved through the channel, so a light at the entrance was essential for navigation. The image records a working piece of maritime infrastructure at a moment when the city's shipping trade was expanding quickly.
