The lighthouse in this view stands at the edge of Duluth, Minnesota, where the city meets the western tip of Lake Superior and the harbor entrance has long needed a guiding light. The photograph was taken in 1903 by Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington, D.C., photographer best known for her portraits and her documentary work on schools, buildings, and everyday life. Seen from the beach, the tower reads as both a navigation aid and a landmark, and the view shows how closely the lake's shoreline and shipping routes shaped life in the port.
