Highland Light stands on the bluffs of North Truro, and this view from the southeast shows the tower as it appeared to people approaching by land along the outer Cape. The light is the successor to a lighthouse first built in 1797, which makes it the oldest lighthouse on Cape Cod and one of the tallest. Its tower has guided ships past the dangerous shoals off the Cape's outer shore for generations, and the bluffs beneath it have been slowly eroding into the sea for just as long.
