Taken from the southwest, this view places the keeper's house beside the tower at Portland Head, the rocky point at the entrance to Portland Harbor in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light was first lit in January 1791 under an order from George Washington, which made it one of the earliest lighthouses built by the new federal government. The keeper's quarters were part of the original station, so the grouping shows a working community as much as a single tower on a headland. The stone tower has guided ships along this stretch of coast for more than two centuries.
