Few outbuildings on the New England coast sit as close to a bluff edge as the fog signal engine house at Block Island Southeast Light, which stands along the Mohegan Bluffs in New Shoreham. Built in 1908, the building once housed the engines that drove the station's fog signal, a sound that guided mariners through the thick mist that often rolls across these waters. The lighthouse was moved inland in 1993 as erosion threatened the bluff, but the engine house was not carried along and has been left abandoned. Its weathered walls show how much the station relied on machinery as well as its famous light.
