From a closer vantage point on the southeast side, this view brings the tower and its rocky setting into sharper focus. Portland Head Light guards the approach to Casco Bay and was among the first lights funded by the federal government under its 1789 lighthouse act, with the beam first shining in January 1791. The rubblestone tower and its keeper's dwelling have stood for more than two centuries, making it one of the oldest working lighthouses in the country. Its position on the headland explains why generations of mariners relied on it to find safe passage into Portland Harbor.
