The view here turns from the tower to the keeper's house, seen from its southwest front on Portland Head in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light beside it was first lit in 1791, one of the earliest aids to navigation built under the new federal government, and its keepers lived close by so they could tend the lamp through the night and in bad weather. Keeper's dwellings like this one show how the work of the station was tied to family life on a remote, exposed point of land. The building is worth studying for how it was arranged to serve both the light and the household.
