Few lighthouses in New England sit as high above the water as Block Island Southeast Light, which stands on the Mohegan Bluffs at the island's southeastern edge. This northeast side view shows the whole building, with the tower rising from the attached keeper's quarters. The light was built in 1875 to warn ships off the island's dangerous southern shore, where fog and shifting currents made navigation hazardous. The bluffs themselves are constantly eroding under wind and surf, so the station's position has long been a concern for keepers and island residents.
