The Salmon River Light stands where the river meets Lake Ontario near Port Ontario, a spot that gave steamers, schooners, and fishing boats a visible landmark on a shoreline with few natural harbors. Lighthouses like this one were built along the Great Lakes during the nineteenth century as lake traffic grew with the movement of grain, lumber, and passengers. The tower's position at the river mouth made it useful for guiding vessels in and out of sheltered water. Its setting by the lake shows how these stations depended on both the shape of the coast and the weather that could make open water dangerous.
