Colchester Reef Lighthouse stood on a shoal at the western end of Lake Champlain, marking a hazard that had long threatened lake traffic between Vermont and New York. Built in 1871 as a screw-pile structure, it guided steamboats and sailing vessels through the narrows, and its keepers lived on site, tending the lamp through cold winters when the lake could freeze and ice floes could damage the framework. Pictures like this one show how isolated such stations were, with the tower rising from open water far from the nearest shore.
