Spectacle Reef Light is a lighthouse built on a dangerous shoal in Lake Huron, a site chosen because ships had long run aground on its rocks in the open water north of the Straits of Mackinac. Lights like this one were part of a larger effort in the late 1800s to mark the Great Lakes' reefs and shoals as commercial traffic grew, with iron ore, timber and grain moving through the lakes in increasing volume. Offshore towers of this kind were difficult to build and staff, and keepers often lived in isolation with supplies brought by boat. Look closely at the tower's solid construction and its exposed setting to see why the design had to withstand heavy wind and waves.
