Stannards Rock Lighthouse stands on a submerged reef far out in Lake Superior, marking a hazard that had long threatened ships crossing the open water. Built in the early 1960s, it was among the last major offshore light towers erected on the Great Lakes, and its isolation made construction and upkeep difficult. Pictures of the tower show how exposed such a structure is, with nothing around it but water and sky. The lighthouse belongs to a broader story of federal efforts to make Great Lakes shipping safer through navigation aids placed where land-based lights could not reach.
