Spectacle Reef, a shoal in northern Lake Huron, is the site of the lighthouse shown here, which was built to warn ships away from one of the most dangerous stretches of the Great Lakes. The reef lies off the Michigan coast near the Straits, where strong currents and sudden storms claimed many vessels during the 19th century. Lights like this one were essential to the growing lake trade in grain, lumber and iron ore, and their keepers kept the lamps burning through long, lonely seasons. Look closely at the tower and its surroundings to get a sense of how isolated such stations could be.
