Penfield Reef, a ledge of rock off Fairfield, Connecticut, in Long Island Sound, was marked by a lighthouse built in the mid-nineteenth century to warn coastal shipping of the hazard. This view shows a fourth-order lens light, the size of optic used on lesser coastal stations, with its tower standing on a small, exposed foundation at the edge of the water. Lights like this one were essential to the busy coastal trade between New York and New England, where fog and shifting currents made unmarked reefs a constant threat to vessels.
