Standard Rock Lighthouse sits on a small outcrop in the northern reaches of Lake Superior, off the Minnesota-Ontario border region, and it is among the more isolated lights on the Great Lakes. Built in the late nineteenth century to guide ships past hazards that had claimed vessels in the lake's rough waters, the tower was a lonely post for keepers who lived with their families on a rock surrounded by open water. This United Press International telephoto view, taken from a distance, flattens the scene and makes the tower look almost suspended over the waves, a reminder of how far the station stood from shore.
