This view shows a lighthouse on the Lake Superior shore at Duluth, Minnesota, photographed from the beach in 1903. Duluth was a busy port on the western end of the lake, where grain and iron ore moved through the harbor, so lights like this one guided ships past the sandbars and into the channel. The print belongs to the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, the work of a photographer known for documenting American buildings, places and everyday life around the turn of the twentieth century. Its title was assigned by Library of Congress staff, so the wording describes the scene rather than repeating a caption from 1903.
